“I believe a person should be able to avoid contact with certain races and religions without others accusing those people of being homophobes and racists.”
I’m trying to find a way to this statement make sense, but I’m coming up dry. This is a direct quote from a man I ran across. He objected when I told him that that was the definition of a racist. He argued that because he kept it to himself and his behavior was perfectly congenial when he was around “those people,” he was not, in fact, a racist.
Here’s another quote for you, this time from English Oxford Living Dictionary: “showing or feeling discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or believing that a particular race is superior to another.” (emphasis mine) The Oxford American Dictionary, and every other online dictionary I looked at, had almost the exact same definition.
He also said: “I never give second chances to anyone… Mostly because I’m sure to never give a soul a first chance to begin with.” I don’t even know what that means, but I find it frightening.
There was considerably more to his tirade and I’m trying to figure out what bothers me most about him. As objectionable as I find him, I don’t think he’s particularly dangerous. That is, because he’s careful not to let it show, I don’t get the feeling he’s going to grab an automatic rifle and open fire any time soon.
It’s bad enough that he is as prejudiced as he is, but I know there are people like that out there. What I did not expect was his stupidity! He really believes he is not prejudiced.
So, I’m not sure what bothers me most.
