"Powered On: The SOUNDS I choose to hear & the NOISE I don’t" by Sarah Churman
You may have seen Sarah on Ellen or the Today Show, or seen her viral video on YouTube. On September 26, 2011, Sarah heard clearly for the first time in her life, thanks to the Esteem® implanted hearing device. For the first 29 years of her life, she heard little more than indistinct sounds. In this book, she talks about her life on both sides of 29. I have to say right now, though, I have no idea where the subtitle comes from.
The Team Go or Goes? Collective Singulars
I get really annoyed when I read TV show summaries that say things like “The team go out to Hoboken…” Not that Hoboken is a common destination on TV dramas, but the point is that the verb does not agree with the noun. Yes, more than one person is going out there, but team is singular. Or more specifically, it’s a collective singular. So for the verb to agree, is must be singular, also. “The teams goes out to Hoboken…”
"Who’s in Your Orbit?" by Mike Muhney & Max J. Pucher
This is a book review as well as a business post. It talks about VIPorbit, a new contact management program developed by Mike Muhney and Max J. Pucher. Contact relationship software (CRM) is a type of database that helps salespeople – and others – keep track of whom they called when, what was said, what’s the next step, etc.
"The System" by Eric Lofholm
The subtitle is: The Proven 3-Step Formula Anyone Can Learn to Get More Leads, Book More Appointments, and Make More Sales Some say either you can sell or you can’t. You’re born with it or you’re not. Eric Lofholm disagrees. And he’s in a position to know.
"THE cANCER DANCE" by Barry Spilchuk
The subtitle is “What do you do when cancer catches you with your pants down?” Catchy, doncha think? I think that is because while he was dancing with cancer, he was also going through a separation from his wife and a bankruptcy. Talk about a one-two punch!
"Impact" is Not a Verb!
I’m writing this entry now because in another couple of years, I probably won’t be able to. So, here it is: In the past four or five years, a new practice has come into vogue: Using the word “impact” as a verb. You talk about your actions impacting something or someone else, or the United States foreign policy impacting the world market, or whatever. Impact is not a verb. It is a noun. You do not impact something, you have an impact on something.
Why Do I Get to be So Lucky?
I participate in Quora, an online question-answer forum. Anyone can ask, anyone can answer. There was a question from a woman whose story was so horrendous that I started my response with, “I just have to ask, is this a joke? It just seems too extreme to be real. But assuming it is…” This girl’s story was so awful that if you put it in a TV drama,

The New England Journal of Medicine recently published a podcast from a researcher who is telling us not to take calcium supplements. OMG! I mean, I thought that was the one thing we knew for sure was good for us. But then, there are factions saying we shouldn’t use sunscreen. Again, OMG! Is there nothing we can count on?
"The Wiregrass" by Pam Webber
The Campbell cousins always spend summers in Crystal Springs, in the Florida panhandle, visiting Granny, Ain’t Pitty and Uncle Ben, and assorted other ain’ts and uncles. The area was known as – you guessed it – the Wiregrass, so named for the type of grass that grew there which is – another big surprise – very wiry and sharp and difficult to walk on in bare feet.
