Health and Lifestyle
Anyone who doesn’t like getting older isn’t doing it right. Life gets nothing but better with every passing moment. Okay, maybe not “nothing but,” but I stick with my statement. If you don’t find that the maturity, wisdom, calm, experience, and everything else you gain as you mature doesn’t far outweigh anything you might be giving up, then you have a problem that has nothing to do with age.
If you’re a business owner, you get lots of calls from people you have absolutely no interest in talking to. That’s a given. Most of these calls are a waste of your time. You know that, I know that, the caller knows that, but may honestly believe her call is not a waste of your time.
As I was getting back into my car in the mall parking lot, the guy sitting in his care two spaces away (no cars in between), said, “You’re beautiful!” He was well past middle age and he just had this big ol’ smile on his face. Not leering, just enjoying looking at what he considered to be a beautiful woman.
Asthma is on the rise. And has been for a couple of decades. At first it was thought the increase was because we’re just too clean. Kids aren’t exposed to enough germs to develop a strong enough immune system. Some studies now, though, are saying increased hygiene may not be responsible for the rise in asthma. So, the jury’s still out on that one.
Did you know there is someone in the country who is legally permitted to take recreational drugs? Believe it or not, it’s true. Or it was, anyway. I don’t remember his name, so I’ll just call him Fred. Fred he was a very normal looking guy, about average height, not thin but not heavy. Perhaps not surprisingly, he did have longish hair and a beard. So, why was he allowed to do drugs?
The New England Journal of Medicine recently published a podcast from a researcher who is telling us not to take calcium supplements. OMG! I mean, I thought that was the one thing we knew for sure was good for us. But then, there are factions saying we shouldn’t use sunscreen. Again, OMG! Is there nothing we can count on?
The Mediterranean Diet has been known for a long time to be associated with greatly improved cardiovascular health. Now a new study done by Dr. Miguel Martanez-Gonzalez of the University of Navarra in Spain indicates it might lower a women’s risk of breast cancer by as much as 62%.
I think everyone knows physical exercise is good for kids. Well, good for everybody, but it has a strong affect on a child’s development. But did you know it helps develop the mind as well? This has been well-documented; moat child experts pretty much acknowledge this now. Dr. John J. Ratey wrote an experiment where kids were given the opportunity to come to school early to run for about a half hour.
Did you know different DNA responds to food differently? It also has different supplement needs. You know how they say women should always take extra iron? Not me. Based on blood work, I’ve been told to make sure my multivitamin does not have extra iron. It’s in my genes.
