"Gift from the Sea" by Anne Morrow Lindbergh
This book is for women. Men would get a great deal from it, but it is written for women. It’s a series of essays Ms. Lindbergh – a woman with a husband and five children – wrote while spending time alone at her island home. She is alone there, by choice, and contemplates not only her life, but the situation of woman. We lose our center, she says. We approach the world from the periphery – children, husband, house, community, church, etc. – when we should be getting our core being centered and balanced.
"The Big Leap" by Gay Hendricks
Everybody’s heard the expression, You can’t have everything. Well, why not? Who says? What is the fundamental reason it is not possible for us to have everything? According to Gay Hendricks, it is possible. What stops us is our own limiting beliefs. To be clear, having everything is not the same as having it both ways. The latter is more like You can’t have your cake and eat it, too. I used to hate that expression.
Employee or Independent Contractor?
Some Über drivers are suing for reimbursement for gas and other maintenance costs, saying they are actually employees, not independent contractors. I did a little research on this. Not a lot, there’s a whole lot I still don’t know.
Etiquette Never Goes Out of Style
If your eyes just glazed over, hang on a sec. Etiquette is not complicated or arcane. It’s about how we treat people. I think the problem is more with the word than the concept. Should Numbers be Followed by (Numerals)?
That is, do you say you want to order five (5) of something, or just five or just 5? Depends on who you ask. Grammar Girl, of whom I am a great fan, says it is “a relic of legal writing.” FumbleFingers says, “Have people already forgotten how to write cheques?” (FumbleFingers must be British.) And others throw in examples of why it is/is not needed.
"Unlucky 13" by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
James Patterson’s Women’s Murder Club series is a girlfriends’ story. They work together to solve murders, but so much of it is about the relationships between the women, which are very well drawn, possibly because Mr. Patterson has the sense to use a female co-writer, Maxine Paetro. The club is currently comprised of San Francisco police detective Lindsay Boxer, medical examiner Claire Washburn, DA Yuki Castellano, and reporter Cindy Thomas. As the title indicates, this is the 13th in the series.
The Elusive Peach
Possibly the most delicious fruit in the mainland United States is a really good peach. It’s not just the flavor, it’s the overtones. "The Confession" by John Grisham
A young man has been convicted of murder and is scheduled to be executed in a few days. A shady-looking character, Travis Boyette, drops into Pastor Keith Schroeder’s church office and says he doesn’t want that boy to die for a crime that he, Travis, committed. Long story short, he coerces Keith into taking him to Sloan, Texas, so he can confess and show them literally where the body is buried.
"Web Copy That Sells" by Maria Veloso
There are so many millions of web sites out there that surfers are overwhelmed. The result of this glut of information is that surfers will spend an average of just 8 seconds on a site before moving on and forgetting all about the previous ones. So, how do you keep them on your site long enough to at least read what you’re about?
