"Spotlight," Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church Scandal
Note: This month it’s another Movie of the Week.- Like I said in The Danish Girl post, all the big movies this year are true stories or from true events. What’s up with that? Anyway, Spotlight was the name of the Boston Globe‘s team of crack investigative journalists. They were the ones who broke the story about the sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church.
Just Say You’re Sorry
I filed some forms with the government last month. Twice I asked exactly what I had to send in with it. After compiling the documents, I called again, told the woman what I was sending, and asked if I had everything. She said yes, I did, go ahead and send it in. So I did.

Note: As you know if you follow me, I’m doing Movie of the Week for a little while because I have to watch a whole bunch of movies right now so I don’t have a lot of time to read. All the big movies this year are true stories! Or based very closely on true stories. Trumbo, Bridge of Spies, Room, Straight Outta Compton, Steve Jobs, The Danish Girl, Beast of No Nation, The Revenant, The Big Short, … I don’t know why, but there you have it. So, whether or not these movies are good, they are important. You should try to see all of them.

So, the snow has finally stopped and now it’s time to dig out. I like this part. The buildings in my complex horseshoe around a parking lot and everyone comes out and we all help each other dig out. It’s really surprising how fast this massive job goes if everybody works together and just keeps digging.

"Bridge of Spies" Steven Spielberg & Tom Hanks
Any time you start out with Tom Hanks and Stephen Spielberg, you know it’s going to be worthwhile. It’s a true story of a Cold War prisoner exchange. Tom Hanks plays insurance attorney James Donovan, who is recruited to defend recently captured Soviet spy Rudolf Abel. The idea is to show the world – that is to say, the Soviets – that even a spy gets due justice in the United States of America.
Yeah vs Yea vs Yay
So close. They’re almost interchangeable. But they’re not quite. Yeah is a slang/casual form of yes. Yea is not, though it is often used as such. Yea originally referred to an affirmative vote: yea or nay. These days, though, it’s used as a cheer. “Yea! We won!”
Yea, People!
I got a call from my car insurance company yesterday. A guy had called them saying he had found my wallet and was holding it for me. My license, bank card, and everything else was still there. By that time, I had gotten a new license, bank card, and wallet, so it didn’t make a whole lot of difference, but still. He couldn’t find my number anywhere in the wallet – and let’s all take a lesson from that, shall we?
"Room," the Movie
If you read last week’s Book of the Month, you know I’m doing Movie of the Month for the next few weeks. This week it’s Room and ya gotta go see this movie. It is not a true story, but it is drawn from true stories. You won’t recognize the names of the two leads, but get to know them because you’ll see them again. Brie Larson plays Ma and 7-year-old Jacob Tremblay is 5-year-old Jack.
